THEME // SANDERSON SISTERS RETURN
For Theme Edit’s first abbreviated “Disney Edit”, we’d like to bestow upon thou a guide inspired by one of our favorite movies to watch this time of year, ‘Hocus Pocus’.
This September, the 90’s cult film returned with the three Sanderson sisters brought back to life by a not so happy accident. We enjoyed the nostalgia revived alongside the sisters, so getting a little witchy in their honor felt appropriate. Enjoy our guide as we countdown to All Hallows Eve.
WATCH //
Hocus Pocus is the main course, but in true Theme Edit fashion we’re sampling all the witchy media we can get our hands on. Here is a list of movies and shows to watch this week to continue the magic.
Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus 2
Bewitched
Sabrina The Teenage Witch
Bedknobs and Broomsticks

* a note on the fashion curation - our hope is that you will utilize what you have in your closet, thrift, or choose pieces you will keep for a log time … stretching your creativity rather adding to the landfills.
BEAUTIFY //
Favorite Walgreens “youth potion” finds. These Hocus Pocus inspired beauty buys are our favorite spells for hair, face, and body.
Mercedes Edit:
So as to not poison thine self or thow - I chose items that score low on the EWG Think Dirty app, and have that glimmery shimmer that one sees when the sisters pass over to the other realm.
massage oil / body lotion / black soap / rose glow primer / mascara / red lipstick
Carly’s Edit:
Like any good witch, when I find a spell that works, I never forget it. My drugstore spell is simple, but effective. It must include something to snack on, a few things for the skin for a later ritual, and some items to pretty myself for the witching hour.
witches KitKat / eye pencil / nail polish / face peel / face mask / hairspray
DECORATE //
We’re sprinkling spells around the house with spooky decor to keep a mystical feeling alive all season.
SKULLS, like the wallpaper from Gilbert’s magic store in “Hocus Pocus 2”, aka the old Sanderson sister’s cottage
EVIL EYE
Seeing Eye Bead Wall {as seen in the film}
DIY Spell Book Decor (also a fun “DO” craft)
To make your very own spell book, purchase this journal, these pens, and a nail polish top coat
Start by painting the stone all white, let dry
Then add the purple eyelid and black liner, let dry
Add the green, brown, or blue (your choice) iris, let dry
Complete the eye with the black pupil
Finish with a clear coat of nail polish to add the eye like glossy sheen and protect against scratches
EAT //
Play around with these potions in the kitchen! If you're feeling the spirit {s}, host a gathering for your closest coven - watch films, dress up, craft, eat, drink, and be merry {like sister Mary Sanderson herself}
Witches Brew Cocktail {we also love the accompanying dinner party details}
…Or try this homemade version sans alcohol
Children's {favorite} Stew with Sourdough bread
Book brownies with black flame candle ice cream
LISTEN //
In putting together this theme’s playlist, we’ve learned the motif of the witch is everywhere in music. Linked is a small compilation of spooky, full moon tunes so you can pretend you’re on a broomstick while you drive to work. Listen here.
DO //
If we took anything away from the Sanderson Sisters, it’s this: the things we do with intention, matter. You don’t have to recite spells to participate in ritual; if done with intention, practice and/or in routine, anything can be ritualistic. It adds magic to the day when our routine is sprinkled with small moments like these. A precise amount of cinnamon in your morning oatmeal? A certain song while you brush your teeth? A quiet prayer between emails? Not just habits, now these are your “good day” spells ; )
Is 7 not the most magical number? Here are Hocus Pocus inspired countdown activities to enjoy each day as you await All Hallows Eve.
Take a walk in a graveyard and/or stroll your neighborhood to look at decorations.
Do a craft - create the diy spell book; or make spirit glitter orbs reminiscent of the glitter the sisters turn to upon their departure form this realm.
Form a calming circle. One can do this through drawing a circle and writing comforting words within; find a loved one to hold both hands with and breath or sing, or walk around the block and meditate on the below reflection questions.
If available visit a local town carnival or a museum with a spooky theme.
Crystals! Grow crystals; display them around your home, learn their uses via this guide, and /or go crystal shopping. Crystal shops are often almost like a museum, full of beauty to admire. Slowing down to enjoy the beauty of these natural elements brings awe to creation and a sense of calm.

Dress up! One of our most favorite activities for All Hallows Eve is theming through costume. In addition to the Sanderson Sisters, here is a list of other classic costumes you see in the films - in case you need last minute inspiration:
Classic Black Hat Witch (Mercedes choice this year)
Black cat
Zombie
Devil
Cop
Medusa
Dracula
80’s Madona
LEARN //
Theme Edit 💜’s informed media consumption. Movies always prompt us to learn more, so we invite you to dive deeper into the themes within Hocus Pocus with us! These articles helped to answer small questions we had while watching and gave some great witchy context!
REFLECT //
While we don’t support dark magic by any means, we deeply believe in the power of ritual and that life is truly magical when we allow ourselves to look into the spaces between.
What are some practices (big or small) you already have in place that add magic to your day?
Do you find that you attach any deeper meaning to seemingly everyday occurrences? What from your life informs this?
